The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) is headed by an autonomous regional government, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The largest city, the capital of Erbil (Hewlêr) is located at 36°11′N 44°00′E. Other notable cities are Sulaimania, Dohuk, Halabja, and Kirkuk.
The Kurdistan Regional Government is a parliamentary government headed by President Masoud Barzani and Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani. The de facto autonomy was established in October 1991, the regional government was established on July 4, 1992. A Transitional Constitution with Iraq was established on January 30, 2005.
Kurdistan is a very diverse region, catering to many different ethnic groups, among them Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, Yezidis, Shabaks, Assyrians and Chaldeans. The main languages spoken in the Kurdistan Region are Kurdish (Sorani and Badini), Arabic, Assyrian, and Turkomen. There are also a variety of religions practiced in the region including Islam (both Sunni and Shi’a), Christianity, Yezidi, Shabak, and Zoroastrianism.
